North American Monsoon Roars Into California as Flash Flood Watches Spread Across the Southwest

PHOENIX โ€” July 17, 2026. The North American monsoon has arrived early and forcefully this year, with the National Weather Service in Arizona issuing a Flood Watch covering most of the state through Friday morning and monsoonal moisture now spreading well into California, Nevada, and the Sierra Nevada. Rain rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour are dropping on drainages that stay bone-dry most of the year โ€” the exact recipe for the flash floods that kill more people annually than any other severe weather hazard in the western United States.

NWS Flagstaff summarized the pattern bluntly on Thursday: "Active Monsoon Continues. Many have had rain overnight and this wet pattern will continue today. Localized Flash Flooding remains possible."

The moisture surge is unusually far west

What makes the 2026 monsoon notable isn't just how early it arrived โ€” it's how far west and north the moisture is pushing. The Sacramento Bee reported Sunday's rare showers stretching from Redding to Bakersfield, with the North American monsoon reaching Central California โ€” a pattern meteorologists called "a sign of the strength of the weather pattern."

UCLA's atmospheric sciences discussion noted "the upper level wind flow pattern has been favorable to import monsoon moisture into the Southland (since the end of last week)" and forecast the pattern to continue through the end of July, with additional bursts likely into August. Precipitable water values across the Desert Southwest have climbed to 2 inches (56 mm) โ€” near the top of the climatological range for the region.

Where flash flooding is most likely

The Weather Prediction Center's rainfall outlook through next Thursday shows widespread 2 to 4-inch totals with isolated 5-inch amounts across:

  • Northern and central Arizona โ€” Flagstaff, Sedona, Prescott Valley, Payson, and the Mogollon Rim highlands
  • Southern Arizona โ€” Tucson metro, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties
  • Phoenix metro โ€” spot totals of 1+ inch with locally higher amounts under stronger cells
  • Southern California mountains and deserts โ€” San Jacinto, Santa Rosa, San Bernardino, and eastern Sierra ranges plus the Coachella Valley
  • Sierra Nevada foothills โ€” including Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, and Yosemite corridors, where dry lightning is a major fire concern alongside brief heavy rain
  • Southern Nevada and western New Mexico โ€” Las Vegas metro, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces

The classic monsoon danger isn't the total rainfall โ€” it's the rate and the terrain. When 2 inches falls in an hour on parched desert soil that can't absorb it, the water sheets across the landscape, funnels into arroyos and washes, and produces walls of debris-laden water that can move a car in seconds.

El Niรฑo is amplifying the pattern

NOAA's confirmed El Niรฑo (declared in June) is loading the atmosphere with extra warm ocean moisture from both the Gulf of California and the eastern Pacific. As AccuWeather reported this week, this year's monsoon is expected to deliver above-average rainfall to much of the interior West, with the additional wildcard of possible eastern Pacific tropical systems getting pulled into the moisture conveyor โ€” a rare setup that can turn a routine monsoon burst into a multi-inch rainfall event across Southern California.

Two flood threats Californians and Southwest residents forget about

1. Burn scar flash flooding. California has thousands of square miles of recent burn scars โ€” from the 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires, the 2024 Line Fire, and older Sierra complexes. Soil in these areas is hydrophobic for years after burning: water runs off instead of soaking in. Even a routine monsoon thunderstorm dropping half an inch of rain in 20 minutes can produce a debris flow strong enough to tear out roads and bury homes downslope. If you live below a burn scar, treat every monsoon storm alert as a mandatory-preparedness event.

2. Urban flash flooding in cities with poor drainage. Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, and Southern California's inland cities all have storm drain systems sized for typical desert rainfall โ€” not for tropical downpour rates. The 2022 Las Vegas casino flooding and the 2023 Palm Springs Hilary event both dumped massive water into buildings that had never flooded in living memory. What to do before the next burst arrives

  4. Never drive through flowing water. Turn around, don't drown. Two feet of moving water will float most SUVs and trucks. This is not a myth or an overstatement โ€” most flash flood deaths in Arizona and Southern California happen inside vehicles.
  5. Charge devices and pack a small go-bag. Monsoon bursts commonly knock out power for hours to days. On July 13, roughly 23,000 utility customers in the Phoenix Valley lost service in a single evening thunderstorm.

How long will this pattern hold?

The current burst runs through Friday for Arizona, with a brief break over the weekend before the next round arrives late next week. NWS San Diego's Area Forecast Discussion flagged "increasing monsoonal moisture will move into the region through Friday, with elevated chances over the mountains and locally into the deserts," followed by a brief dry-down and another surge by mid-to-late next week.

The broader takeaway: the 2026 monsoon looks like it will be an active, sustained, above-average season with multiple bursts stretching into September.
