StormBags remain fully expanded as long as they stay wet. In hot, dry conditions they will gradually lose moisture over 1–2 weeks. If left in standing floodwater they stay at full size indefinitely.
For a standard doorway we recommend 4–6 bags stacked two layers high. For a garage door or larger opening, 8–12 bags. For full perimeter home protection, 25–50+ bags depending on your home's footprint and local flood risk. Use our Storm Protection Planner to get a personalized recommendation.
StormBag must be activated with fresh water — use a garden hose, sprinkler, or any freshwater source. The super-absorbent polymer does not activate properly in salt water. However, once fully hydrated with fresh water, StormBag effectively blocks salt water flooding, including coastal storm surge and hurricane flooding. For coastal homeowners: hydrate your StormBags with a freshwater source before deploying against rising salt water. (Freshwater means any non-saltwater source — tap water, garden hose, rain, pool water, or standing floodwater. It does not need to be filtered or drinkable.)
