The Quietest Atlantic Hurricane Season in 60 Years Is Actually an El Nino Warning
Through Sept. 4, the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has had five tropical storms and zero hurricanes — the least active start to an Atlantic season since at least 1966, measured by accumulated cyclone energy (ACE). Since satellites started routinely covering the basin.
The headlines this week are treating that as good news. It isn't. The same atmospheric mechanism suppressing the Atlantic is loading a firehose at the West Coast, and today is the proof point: Hurricane Marie is spinning 550 miles west-southwest of Baja California at 100 mph, and an atmospheric river is targeting the Pacific Northwest this weekend.
Here's what's actually happening, why the Atlantic silence is misleading, and what homeowners on both coasts should do about it before the next 60 days.
What the numbers say
Through Sept. 4, 2026, the Atlantic has produced Tropical Storms Ana, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, and Edouard — and no hurricanes at all. By comparison, the first Atlantic hurricane usually forms by the second week of August, and September is climatologically the most active month of the season. This is the slowest ACE start since 1966, the year satellite coverage of the basin began.
The reason, per the NOAA Climate Prediction Center's August 2026 ENSO Diagnostic Discussion: wind shear stretching from the Caribbean Sea to just off the west coast of Africa has been the strongest on record for this time of year since 1979. Strong upper-level winds tear developing tropical systems apart before they can organize. That shear is driven by El Nino, which is now in an official Advisory status and is projected to strengthen further through the end of 2026.

- 69% chance, during October-December 2026, of a historic event exceeding the strength of previous El Ninos going back to 1950 (defined as a 3-month RONI value of +2.5°C or more).

The two-basin story: quiet Atlantic, active Pacific
El Nino does two opposite things at the same time. It suppresses Atlantic hurricanes by increasing wind shear. And it strengthens the Pacific storm track by pushing warm sea-surface anomalies eastward, feeding the subtropical jet, and loading Pacific atmospheric rivers with more moisture. That's why the same forecast that predicts a quiet Atlantic predicts a wet, active West Coast winter.
The proof point today: as of the 5 a.m. PDT National Hurricane Center advisory Sept. 4, Hurricane Marie is a Category 2-adjacent system with 100 mph maximum sustained winds and a 972-mb central pressure, located at 20.1°N, 117.9°W — about 550 mi west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. It's moving west-northwest at 9 mph, forecast to peak near 105 mph within 12 hours, then gradually weaken through the weekend. Marie itself won't make U.S. landfall, but its moisture is feeding a broader pattern: swells will spread north to Southern California through the weekend with life-threatening surf and rip currents, and the Weather Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall across the southern third of California for Sept. 6-7.
Farther north, an atmospheric river is targeting the Pacific Northwest, with 1-3 inches of rain forecast across the Coast Ranges, Cascades, northern Sierra Nevada, eastern Oregon, and western Idaho through early Saturday morning. This is the pattern that's going to define the West Coast winter, and it's showing up in early September.
Why this matters if you're on the East Coast
Because September is peak Atlantic month, and the season isn't over. In prior super El Nino years, there was only one September hurricane per season on average — but that number is one, not zero. The wind shear that's currently suppressing storms can weaken briefly. When it does, the warm Atlantic SSTs are still there. A single late-season landfall can undo an entire season of "quiet."
Tropical Storm Edouard, the most recent 2026 Atlantic storm, dropped up to 2 feet of flooding rain over parts of eastern Texas in late August despite never becoming a hurricane. That's the pattern to watch: even without organized hurricanes, tropical moisture in a wet-tilt pattern can produce catastrophic rainfall. The complacency trap
Every super El Nino year on record has produced fewer Atlantic hurricanes on average. That is the correct statistical read. But "fewer" does not mean "none," and September peak season doesn't care about ACE-year records. The 1997 season (a super El Nino) still produced Hurricane Erika in mid-September as a Category 3. The 1982 season produced Hurricane Debby as a Category 4 later in the season. A quiet start is not a quiet finish.
What homeowners should actually do about this in September
The action plan is the same regardless of coast — but the timing pressure is different.
For West Coast homeowners
- Watch atmospheric river forecasts weekly. The National Weather Service and NOAA's Atmospheric River Portal track landfall events 5-7 days out. In a super El Nino year, expect a higher-than-normal frequency starting now and running through March.

- Don't stand down. September is peak Atlantic month. The wind shear currently suppressing hurricanes is a snapshot, not a season. Late-season landfalls in super El Nino years exist historically.

Three data points will define the next 30-60 days:
- Sept. 10, 2026: The next CPC ENSO Diagnostic Discussion drops. Watch for whether the >90% "very strong" threshold moves higher and whether the 69% "historic" probability for Oct-Dec increases.
- Sept. 15-30, 2026: Peak Atlantic hurricane climatology. Any organized system that forms in this window despite the record shear is a signal that El Nino's Atlantic suppression is weakening earlier than expected.
- First named atmospheric river of the West Coast winter. Watch CW3E and NOAA's AR Portal for AR-scale rankings. AR-Cat 4 and AR-Cat 5 events are the ones that produce widespread flooding, mudslides in burn scars, and record river crests.
