Atmospheric River Targets the Pacific Northwest This Weekend
The Weather Prediction Center is forecasting 1-3 inches of rain across the Coast Ranges, Cascades, northern Sierra Nevada, eastern Oregon, and western Idaho through early Saturday morning, driven by a sustained atmospheric river now working its way onshore. Higher elevations may see locally higher totals.
Farther south, Hurricane Marie — currently a 100 mph hurricane located 550 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California per the 5 a.m. PDT National Hurricane Center advisory Sept. 4 — is feeding tropical moisture northward. Life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected along Southern California beaches through the weekend, and a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall covers the southern third of California for Sept. 6-7.

The forecast in numbers
WPC quantitative precipitation forecast
- 1-3 inches total precipitation across the Coast Ranges, Cascades, northern Sierra Nevada, eastern Oregon, and western Idaho through 5 a.m. PDT Saturday, Sept. 5. Higher elevations locally higher.
- Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall covering interior northern California, eastern Oregon, and western Idaho through 5 a.m. PDT Friday.
- Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall covering the southern third of California from 5 a.m. PDT Sunday through 5 a.m. PDT Monday, as Marie's moisture arrives.
- Hurricane Marie: 100 mph sustained winds, 972 mb central pressure, moving west-northwest at 9 mph. Peak intensity forecast near 105 mph within 12 hours, then gradual weakening this weekend.
What "Marginal Risk" actually means
The WPC's Excessive Rainfall Outlook uses a four-tier scale: Marginal (level 1), Slight (level 2), Moderate (level 3), High (level 4). Marginal Risk means isolated flash flooding is possible but not widespread. For homeowners, it's the tier where preparation is prudent, not panicked. Don't wait for a Slight or Moderate upgrade to act — by then the storm is on top of you.

The 72-hour homeowner plan
Today (Thursday)
- Check the alerts. Use our Flood Watch tool to see live NWS flood watches, warnings, and advisories for your county.
- Look at your drainage. Walk the perimeter of your house. Clear leaves out of gutters and downspout extensions. Make sure water leaving downspouts is directed at least 4 feet away from the foundation.
- Look at your low openings. Garage doors, basement window wells, walkout basement doors, sliding patio doors on grade. Anything within 6 inches of the outside grade is a flood risk. Prioritize by how much water they'd let in.
Friday

- Move vehicles off low ground. If your driveway slopes toward the house or the garage is downhill, move at least one vehicle to a higher street.
- Bring in the yard. Patio furniture, planters, tools, kids' toys, anything that can become a projectile or clog a storm drain.
- Charge everything. Phones, power banks, laptops, tool batteries. Fill car gas tanks.
Saturday morning (peak rainfall window)

This is the beginning, not the peak
An atmospheric river in early September is unusual. It's happening because El Nino is strengthening earlier and stronger than typical seasonal transitions. The NOAA Climate Prediction Center's August discussion puts the probability of a very strong El Nino this fall/winter at greater than 90%, and a 69% chance of a historic event during October-December.
What that means for Pacific Northwest and northern California homeowners: expect this weekend's atmospheric river to be the first of many.
