Are StormBags Safe for Drinking Water and Pets?
Yes, the StormBag polymer core is non-toxic and safe for common household environments. The absorbent material is the same class of polymer used in commercial baby diapers, agricultural water retention, and food-service ice packs. This page covers the specific safety questions we hear most often.
What's inside a StormBag?
A dry StormBag contains a super-absorbent polymer core wrapped in a woven outer material. The polymer is a sodium polyacrylate — the same class used in disposable diapers and agricultural moisture retention products. It is not a chemical hazard and does not contain fertilizer, salt, or reactive material.
Is StormBag safe around pets?
Yes. The polymer contents are non-toxic. That said, hydrated StormBags weigh 30 to 35 lbs each and should be treated like any heavy load — dogs and cats should not climb on stacked walls, and small pets should be kept away from the interior side of active flood barriers where water may be pooling.
Is StormBag safe around plants and gardens?
The contents are non-toxic and some gardeners have placed hydrated bags around trees or bushes for slow water release during drought. That's not the primary use case for StormBag, but the material itself is safe. Once hydrated and dried out, some customers place used bags in garden beds as a slow-release water source.
Can StormBag contents touch drinking water?
Contact with municipal drinking water for hydration purposes is safe. That said, StormBag is not certified for potable water treatment or storage — do not use it to filter, purify, or store drinking water. Its function is flood protection, not water treatment.
What if a pet or child ingests polymer from a broken bag?
Sodium polyacrylate is not acutely toxic but is not intended for consumption. If accidental ingestion occurs, contact your veterinarian (for pets) or Poison Control (for children) with the polymer identification. Ingesting large amounts can cause gastrointestinal irritation because the polymer absorbs water.

How do I dispose of used StormBags safely?
Bags used in fresh water or clean flood conditions can be disposed of with regular household waste. Bags exposed to contaminated floodwater (sewage, chemicals, oil) should be treated as contaminated waste and disposed of according to local hazardous-waste guidelines.
