StormBag vs HydroSnake: Sandless Sandbag Comparison and Reviews

HydroSnake's published figures come from its distributors: Anchor Pumps lists a deployed size of 1450 mm x 250 mm, absorption of 15–20 liters, a 2–3 minute inflation time, a wet weight of 15–20 kg, and a flood water protection depth of 50 mm per snake. Arco lists a 0.5 kg dry weight and describes the fill as a mix of wood pulp and super-absorbent polymer, noting the product is often used by fire and rescue services. New Pig UK confirms the same 25 cm x 145 cm dimensions and polypropylene outer fabric, sold by the case of 20.

StormBag's own numbers are on the StormBag product page: 23" x 13", roughly 1" tall dry and about 6" tall hydrated, 1 lb dry expanding to 30–35 lb in 3 to 5 minutes, absorbing roughly four gallons per bag.

One rule applies to both products and gets missed constantly: neither can be hydrated in salt water. StormBag cannot be hydrated in salt water, but will work to repel salt water once they are hydrated with fresh water. HydroSnake's US listings carry the same fresh-water-activation restriction. The number that actually matters: mass per linear foot

Flood barriers fail two ways. They slide, or water goes over them. Both failures are governed by how much weight you have per foot of wall, not how much a single unit weighs.

Run the arithmetic. A hydrated StormBag weighs about 33 lb and covers roughly 14 inches of wall — about 28 lb of ballast per linear foot. Height compounds the same effect. A single row of StormBags gives you a working barrier around 4 inches high with one pass. To reach the same height with HydroSnake you are stacking two layers of 2-inch tubes, and every layer you add is another seam line for water to find. StormBag's 10-pack runs $99.99, about $8.50 per linear foot for a 4-inch row. For genuinely shallow nuisance water across a long run, HydroSnake is cheaper per foot. Where StormBag is the better tool

  • You need a wall, not a threshold strip. Six inches of hydrated height per unit means real barriers without stacking gymnastics.

Unopened cases of StormBags store flat for up to five years in a dry environment. In both cases the enemy is humidity and accidental moisture in storage, not time on the shelf.

How to choose

Use HydroSnake if your problem is shallow, wide, and slow — a garage threshold that weeps in heavy rain, a warehouse door with an inch of standing water outside, a leak you need to steer toward a drain. Use StormBag if your problem has height or speed — a doorway that needs 6 to 12 inches of protection, a driveway that funnels street runoff at your garage, a basement window well, a property where you need to build up rather than lay out.

Most homeowners are in the second category and do not realize it until the water arrives. The honest test is to measure the highest water line you have seen or expect at each opening, then check whether a 2-inch-per-layer product gets you there in one pass.
