Hurricane Lowell Batters Kauai and Niʻihau: What's Happening in Hawaii Right Now

As of the 2:00 AM HST advisory this morning, Hurricane Lowell was passing just north-northwest of Niʻihau as a strong Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center's advisory is direct: damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and powerful waves are still impacting Kauai County right now, and conditions are not expected to improve on the western islands until later Tuesday.

Where the storm is and where it's headed

Lowell's core moved just west of Niʻihau overnight and is now tracking north at roughly 18 mph. A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niʻihau, plus the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals. A Tropical Storm Warning remains up for Oʻahu, per the National Weather Service Honolulu.

The storm's central pressure sits at 963 millibars, and hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center according to CBS News reporting from Monday. Even though Lowell's center never made landfall, its proximity to Kauai has already produced serious damage.

What's already been reported

  • Widespread power outages on Kauai. According to CNN reporting overnight, roughly 90% of homes and businesses in Kauai County lost power as hurricane-force gusts arrived. Wind gusts have hit 87 mph in Nawiliwili and 84 mph in Lihue.
  • Downed trees and debris across the island. Kauai officials are urging residents to stay in place through the morning. The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency confirmed several thousand customers reporting outages and warned that dangerous winds would persist into the early morning.
  • Nearly a foot of rain in Kauai's higher elevations. CNN's Monday coverage noted totals approaching 12 inches at higher elevations, with coastal areas measuring up to 5 inches as of Monday evening.
  • Extreme surf, 20 to 30 feet. The NWS High Surf Warning covers south-facing shores of all Hawaiian islands and west-facing shores of the Big Island. Storm surge of 1 to 4 feet on top of that surf is expected to produce major wave runup and coastal inundation, especially on Kauai and Niʻihau.

What flooding looks like in a storm like this

Hurricane Lowell is a textbook example of what makes Hawaiian storms unusually dangerous: the terrain concentrates rainfall. Trade winds forced up mountainsides squeeze moisture out at a much higher rate than the same storm would produce on flat coastal terrain. When higher elevations catch a foot of rain in a day, that water has to go somewhere — typically down through steep gulches and stream drainages toward populated coastal areas, where flash flooding, landslides, and debris flows follow.
